May is arguably the most magical time to visit Whitstable. The air is crisp but the sun has finally found its warmth, the gardens are in full bloom, and the town begins to hum with that unmistakable seaside energy.
Whether you’re staying at Kiora to wake up to the sound of the waves or to enjoy a sunset with a glass of wine on our patio, here is your curated guide to the best of Whitstable and beyond this May.
Celebrate May Day Like a Local
If you’re visiting over the early May Bank Holiday (4th May 2026), you’re in for a treat. Whitstable’s May Day celebrations are a delightful throwback to English tradition.
What to expect: Morris Dancers parading down the High Street, traditional "Jack-in-the-Green" festivities, and a family-friendly fair at Whitstable Castle.
Pro Tip: It’s a short, scenic walk from Kiora up the Tankerton Slopes to reach the Castle gardens.

Conquer "The Street"
One of Whitstable’s most unique natural features is right on your doorstep. The Street is a natural shingle spit that reveals itself only at low tide, stretching half a mile out into the Thames Estuary.
The Experience: May’s mild weather is perfect for "walking on water." At low tide, you can walk right out into the sea with the water on both sides of you.
Check the Tides: Always check the local tide tables before you set off!

A Taste of Kent: The Canterbury Wine Festival
Just a 20 minute drive away, the Canterbury Wine Festival takes place on the 15th-16th May at Westgate Hall. Kent is rapidly becoming the "Champagne region" of England, and this event is the perfect place to sample award-winning local fizz and still wines.

Coastal Blooms and Garden Shows
May is "Garden Month" in the Garden of England.
The Kent Garden Show 23rd-25th May: Held at the Kent Showground, Detling, this is a must-visit for plant lovers seeking inspiration for their own outdoor spaces.
Whitstable Castle Gardens: If you prefer to stay local, the Castle’s manicured lawns and vibrant flower beds are at their peak beauty this month.

Sunsets at The Old Neptune
No trip to Whitstable is complete without a visit to "The Neppy." This iconic pub sits right on the shingle beach. In May, the evenings stretch out longer, providing the perfect backdrop for a pint of local ale as the sun dips below the horizon.
